Science Communication – beyond the ivory tower and journalism
international conference and international workshop
An event giving a overview of science communication and introducing new
dierctions of research and action will be held on 27 November 2006 in
the Main Building of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the „House
of Future”. The conference is also the closing event of the research
and communication program entitled „The communication of knowledge and
society – the social presence of scientific research and technological
development” (supported by the Jedlik Ányos program of the National
Office for Research and Technology), in progress since January 2006.
The event will be held by Knowledge Society Foundation
(www.tudastars.hu), in cooperation with the Hungarian Academy of
Sciences (www.mta.hu) and Mindentudás Egyeteme / ENCOMPASS
(www.mindentudas.hu) public company, targeted at actors and academic
experts of science communication, and involving representatives of the
media and science.
A major result and message of the one-year research program to be
presented at the conference is that in order to make science
communication efficient, we must transcend the traditional framework of
scientific journalism. Therefore we sought to invite contributions by
representatives of the media industry and science, who encounter the
initiatives of science transmission as ’outsiders’.
An important element of the conference is that we host practical
experts and academic researchers of European science communication. We
present the experiences of Hungarian best practices to them, and
employing their help by consultation, we incorporate their
recommendations into national developments.
