TUDOK 2023 – Call for application


In the 2022/2023 academic year the Hungarian Research Student Association announces the 23nd National Conference of Researching Students (hereinafter TUDOK 2023), with the aim to stimulate interest in scientific thinking and research.

General information

You can enter the conference in two of the following ways:

As in previous years, you may apply with your own, independent work, which discusses the results (completed research block)

As in the most recent conference, you are given the opportunity to apply with research that builds on the hypothesis, that has a developed methodology, but does not yet have results (research plan block)

To enter TUDOK 2023 you must complete an online form available at www.kutdiak.hu. On the form you must indicate whether you wish to compete in the “completed research block” or the “research plan block”. Please note that with you can only apply to one block per research project.

 

 

There are three rounds of TUDOK 2023

1., Written round: you must upload an abstract/research plan during the registration to the competition. The entry form must be submitted to the thematic conference proposed by the entrant.

Deadline: midnight of November 30, 2022.

2., Oral pre-selection round: the pre-selection rounds will be held in January and February 2023 on a thematic basis classified into Human- and Social Sciences, Life and Environmental Sciences, and Applied Sciences and Technology.

The planned venue and dates of the regional conferences:

Highlands Regional Conference, Dunaszerdahely, Vámbéry Ármin Primary School, Planned date: 27 January 2023.

Regional Conference of Vojvodina, Zenta, School of Economics and Trade, Planned date: 21 January 2023.

Transylvanian Regional Conference (TUDEK), Szamosújvár, Kemény Zsigmond Secondary School, Planned date: 3-4 March 2023.

3., TUDOK 2023 Carpathian Basin Final:

The Carpathian Basin finals will always be held in Hungary.

Planned venue of the final of the XXIII Carpathian Basin Conference of Scientific Student Circles: Premontrian School Centre, Gödöllő.

The final will take place from 31 March to 1 April 2023.

Each student in Hungary will participate in a thematic conference in their field of research, decided by the Movement’s Board within 10 working days of the deadline for applications. Transnational participants will participate in the corresponding transnational regional conferences. Acceptance of applications from students from abroad will be decided by the local organisers in consultation with the National Association of Research Students; applicants will be notified of their decision within 10 working days of the deadline for applications.

Any derogation from these provisions may be made only with a specific request to the National Association of Research Students and with the permission of the Bureau.

Competitors may present their own research in person at the conference venue in the form of a presentation. A maximum of two authors per presentation is allowed.

On the basis of the presentations that have passed on from the thematic and transnational conferences, the organisers will set up sections for the TUDOK Carpathian-Basin Final.

The TUDOK 2023 Carpathian Basin Final will be decided by the jury of the Thematic Conferences on Life and Environmental Sciences, on the Thematic Conferences on Science and Real Sciences, on the Thematic Conferences on Humanities and Social Sciences and on the Regional Conferences.

The number of entries for the Regional Conference in Vojvodina exceeds 20

The number of entries for the Regional Conference in the Highlands exceeds 20

More than 30 entries for the Transylvanian Regional Conference (TUDEK)

In case the number of entries does not reach the minimum number of entries, the nominating students will be assigned to the thematic conference corresponding to their field of specialisation.

 

If the number of nominations for conferences beyond the backlog is less than 5, they will be automatically assigned to the thematic conference of their field.

To apply for TUDOK 2023 please visit www.kutdiak.hu.

In the upper right corner of the site click the “Login” button. After logging in, you can register for the conference under the “competitions” tab from October 15, 2022. During the application the entry form must be submitted to the appropriate thematic conference.

Course of the competition

A., Completed research block

General information:

Similarly to previous years, you may apply for the “completed research block” of TUDOK 2023 with your own work, which must be based solely on scientific research without restrictions on the topic. Students applying with art or other non-scientific projects will be rejected. Only the students who obtained their maturation certificates in 2022 or those receiving it after 2022 are eligible to compete. There is no minimum age.

During the first round (written round), abstracts submitted at the same time as the entry form will be judged by an expert jury, and a notification will be sent within ten days after the application period which will contain the decision on which preselector conference the student can partake based on the field of their research. In each section of the thematic conferences a maximum nine, in the case of section merge, maximum thirteen entries can be present.

During the second round, the contestants present their work at the conference in an online sphere. One presentation may have no more than two authors.

Based on the results of the pre-selection conferences the organizers compose the sections for the third round, the Carpathian Basin Final. In each section maximum nine, in the case of section merge, maximum thirteen entries can be present.

The formal requirements of the Abstract (first round):

During the first round, the abstract of the research must be uploaded to the online system, based on which the research is evaluated. Following the evaluation of the abstract by an expert committee the research will be categorised into sections. The abstract can be a minimum of 1200 and a maximum of 2000 characters (with spaces included). During the application the name of the author(s) and their school, the name and workplace of the mentor(s) or teacher(s) and the title of the presentation must be provided. Moreover, a declaration statement by the school, preparatory teacher or mentor must be attached to the application form, which refers the work for submission.

The abstract must contain an introduction, the goals of the project, the materials and methods used as well as the achievements and the results.

Those students whose research projects are in the early stages at the time of application, and thus cannot upload an abstract, must upload a research plan instead (minimum 500 characters). The research plan only indicates the intention to enter but does not qualify as an application. In case a research plan is submitted, the deadline for uploading the abstract is January 10, 2023. If the title of the research plan differs from the title of the abstract, a request must be submitted by email to kutdiak@kutdiak.hu, which will be evaluated by the Hungarian Research Student Association within three days.

Formal requirements of the presentation (pre-selection and finals):

Each author/co-author duo is given ten minutes to present their research, followed by a maximum of five minutes for debate and discussion.

You can make a presentation and you are allowed to use illustrative tools too. Gifts to the jury are strictly forbidden, will result in disqualification!

Aspects of the evaluation of the research in the “completed research block”:

The presentations will be evaluated by an expert jury at both the pre-selection and the Carpathian Basin Final conferences. The scientific works are evaluated on the basis of the research projects’ factuality and quality. In the finals, the qualifiers can only present the same topic raised at the pre-selection conferences. The presentations can be supplemented with new results prepared in the meantime.

A total of 40 points can be achieved in the TUDOK final:

  • The originality of the research 5 points
  • The quality of research 5 points
  • Professional competence and background knowledge 5 points
  • The logical structure of the research 5 points
  • Debate skills 5 points
  • Presentation style 5 points
  • Formal requirements of the presentation 5 points
  • Knowledge of scientific literature, professional knowledge 5 points

Prizes for students in the “completed research block”:

Authors of the best presentations at the pre-selection conferences may receive other rewards in addition to advancing to the final round.

At the Carpathian Basin Final of TUDOK 2023, the following prizes will be awarded in the “completed research block”:

  • Grand Prize (best presentations at the conference, maximum 1 person/section)
  • First Prize (best presentation in the section)
  • Second Prize, Special Prize (the jury may give a special prize of up to 25% of the presentations in the given section, from which it is possible to deviate only in exceptional cases (the jury may give a special prize of up to 25% of the presentations in the given section, from which it is possible to deviate only in exceptional cases)

Rewards of the winners of the sections in the “completed research block” of the Carpathian Basin Final of TUDOK 2023:

  • Grand Prize recipients will receive 30 bonus admission points from the subject assigned to their section.
  • First Prize recipients will receive 20 bonus admission points for the subjects assigned to their section.
  • Winners will be invited to the six-day long National Student Conference in the summer of 2023, held near Lake Balaton. Should the epidemiological situation not allow it, the National Student Conference will be held online (“KáptalanOnline”).
  • Winners will be offered a variety of publication opportunities, as well as the opportunity to attend the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony in Stockholm and to participate in the National Scientific Students’ Associations Conference (OTDK) held every two years for higher education students.
  • Recipients will be offered a variety of publication opportunities, as well as the opportunity to qualify for the Stockholm Nobel Prize and to participate in the National Scientific Student Conference (OTDK), a biennial conference held for students conducting research in higher education.

B., Research plan block

General information:

Students may apply to the “research plan block” of TUDOK 2023 with their works that do not have results but have a developed methodology. The projects must solely be scientific without restriction on the topic. Students applying with art or other non-scientific projects will be rejected. Only students who obtained their maturation certificates in 2022 or those receiving it after 2022 are eligible to compete. There is no minimum age.

Dependent on the number of entries in the “research plan block” the projects will be organised into sections according to their discipline and the “research plan” pre-selection rounds will be held at the thematic conferences. If the number of entries in the “research plan block” does not reach the minimum number required for independent pre-selection rounds, there will be a separate occasion (pre-selection) for the evaluation of the “research plan block” in February 2023. Winners of the “research plan” pre-selections will compete in the Carpathian Basin Final .

If the number of entries for transnational conferences in the Research Plan block is less than 5, they will be automatically assigned to the thematic conference of the area.

The final will be a competition between the shortlisted/qualified entries from the Research Agenda block.

In the first round (written round), the research plan abstracts submitted at the same time as the application form will be assessed by a panel of experts and within 10 days of the deadline for applications, the student will be notified of the thematic conference in which he/she will be invited to participate in accordance with his/her research area. At the pre-selection conferences, a maximum of 9 entries per section (category) will be allowed without merging sections, and a maximum of 13 entries per section if merging is used.

During the second round, the contestants present their research plan at the conference in an online sphere. One presentation may have no more than two authors.

  • Recipients will receive direct assistance from KutDiák, including the Alumni, to obtain an appropriate mentor, research location and other necessary support to carry out the work presented in the research plan in the most efficient way possible.
